Reviews and the review generator

Reviews are one of the few ranking signals you can grow every single week. Here is why they matter for maps and AI answers, what the rules allow, and how we help you collect more of them.

6 minute read

In short

  • Reviews affect where you rank on maps, whether people tap your listing, and what AI assistants say about you.
  • A steady flow of fresh reviews is worth more than a burst of old ones.
  • Never pay for reviews, offer rewards for them, or ask only happy customers. Google prohibits all three.
  • Reply to every review, including the bad ones. Future customers read your replies.
  • Every plan includes replies to every new review. Pro and Extended add a review generator that asks customers for you.

Why reviews matter

Google says it ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Reviews feed prominence, which is Google's way of judging how well known and trusted a business is. The number of reviews, your average rating and what people write all play a part.

Local search specialists agree. In a survey of local SEO experts run by BrightLocal and cited by Ahrefs, reviews came second only to Google Business Profile signals as a factor for map pack rankings.

Reviews also do work after the ranking. When someone sees three businesses in the map pack, the star rating and review count are often what decides the tap. And the words in reviews matter too. If customers keep mentioning "same-day crown" or "great with kids", that language helps Google and AI tools connect you with those searches.

AI assistants read reviews as well. Gemini leans on Google's own data, including your Business Profile and its reviews. ChatGPT search draws on web sources, which include review and directory sites. A business with plenty of recent, specific, positive reviews gives these tools something solid to repeat.

Steady and recent beats a big pile

Two ideas are worth knowing:

  • Review velocity is how often new reviews arrive. A few every week looks like a healthy, busy business.
  • Recency is how fresh your latest reviews are. A searcher who sees that your newest review is eight months old may wonder if you are still open.

A sudden flood of 40 reviews in two days and then silence can look unnatural. Google's spam filters may hide reviews that seem suspicious, and you rarely get told why. The fix is simple and boring: ask every customer, every week, as part of how you work.

What's allowed and what isn't

Google's review policy is strict, and breaking it can get reviews removed or your profile restricted. Here is the plain version.

Review practices that are allowed and not allowed
AllowedNot allowed
Asking every customer for an honest reviewAsking only customers you think are happy (review gating)
Sending a direct link or QR code to your review pageOffering discounts, gifts or prize draws in exchange for reviews
A friendly reminder if someone hasn't left one yetPaying anyone, or any service, to post reviews
Replying publicly to any reviewStaff or family reviewing their own business
Flagging reviews that break Google's rules (spam, hate, fake)Pressuring people to change or delete a negative review

What is review gating? It means checking a customer's mood first, for example "Did you enjoy your visit? Yes or no", and only sending the happy ones to Google. It is a common trick, it breaks Google's policy, and we never set it up.

You can report a review that is fake, abusive or off-topic. You cannot get a genuine negative review removed just because it hurts. Local Booster does not offer removal of legitimate reviews, and anyone who promises it is worth avoiding.

Replying to reviews

Replies show both Google and future customers that someone is paying attention. Keep them short, human and specific.

Positive reviews

Thank the person, mention something they said, and invite them back. Vary the wording so replies don't read like a template. Where it fits naturally, name the service, such as "glad the brake repair went smoothly".

Negative reviews

  • Reply within a day or two, calmly. You are writing for the next 100 readers, not just the reviewer.
  • Thank them, acknowledge the problem without arguing, and offer to fix it offline with a name and a phone number or email.
  • Don't share private details about the customer, especially in healthcare.
  • If the review breaks Google's rules, flag it as well as replying.

A fair, polite reply to a one-star review often does more for trust than another five-star review would.

Apple Maps ratings

Apple Maps handles reviews differently. It uses partner data, such as Yelp, for ratings and reviews, and iPhone users can also leave quick ratings and photos inside Apple Maps itself. You can't send people a simple "review us on Apple" link the way you can with Google, so the best approach is to keep your Apple Business Connect listing accurate and make sure your Yelp page is claimed and tidy. Our Apple Maps and Bing Places guide covers this in more detail.

How the review generator works

The review generator is the part of Local Booster that asks customers for reviews on your behalf, so it happens even on busy weeks. What you get depends on your plan.

Review features by plan
PlanHow reviews are requestedReplies
BaseYour own review link and a QR code to share yourselfWe reply to every new review
ProAutomatic review requests sent by text and email after a visitWe reply to every new review
ExtendedAutomatic requests, plus in-store QR cards and follow-up reminders for people who haven't left one yetWe reply to every new review

Every request goes to every customer you include, with the same link to your Google review page. Nobody is filtered out based on how they felt about the visit.

What we need from you

  • Manager access to your Google Business Profile, so we can reply to reviews.
  • A way to reach customers. For Pro and Extended, that usually means customer emails or phone numbers from your booking system, POS or CRM. If you can't share those, in-store QR cards still work.
  • A contact for tricky reviews. For complaints that need facts we don't have, we check with you before replying.
  • Permission to message your customers, in line with the consent you already collect.

What Local Booster does about it

  • All plans: replies to every new review, a review link and QR code, and profile watch to catch spam reviews and unwanted edits.
  • Pro: the review generator sends automatic requests by text and email.
  • Extended: adds in-store QR cards and follow-up reminders, so fewer requests are forgotten.
  • Every month: your report shows new reviews, average rating and how review activity lines up with your map grid results.

We do not buy reviews, offer incentives, gate reviews or remove genuine negative ones. See what's included for the full list.

What you can do yourself

  • Ask in person at the moment people are happiest, such as at checkout or when handing back the car.
  • Put the QR code at the counter, on receipts and on appointment cards.
  • Make it easy: one tap to the review form, no extra steps.
  • Suggest customers mention what they came in for. Never script the words or the rating.
  • Read your reviews monthly. Repeated complaints are free business advice.
  • Claim your Yelp page so the reviews feeding Apple Maps are on a profile you control.
